VISN 21 VAPAHCS Upgrade 12kV Electrical Capacity and Re-balance of Loads on North and South Substations

Davenergy was contracted to provide 35% design development (bridging documents) to replace and upsize the existing 400-amp feeders and to re-balance loads on the North and South substations to support planned future construction. Our design staff maintained close coordination with the City of Palo Alto Utility (CPAU) department. Extensive permitting with the CPAU and other local municipalities was required, as was coordination to address traffic management issues during potholing.

Major tasks of this electrical upgrade project were to:

  • Replace and upsize the existing 400-amp feeders from the Hanover and Maybell substations to SS-1 (North) and SS-2 (South) with 475-500-amp feeders using existing infrastructure
  • Provide a second 475-500-amp service from each Hanover and Maybell substation to the VA Palo Alto campus
  • Re-balance loads on the North and South substations to support construction of the new Ambulatory Care Center
